Edward Hopper- The Great Inspiration
The painter Edward Hopper occupies the same space cinematically as the punk rock band The Ramones do musically in Little Stevies Underground Garage. Everything before him that is great inspired him and everything since that is great was inspired by him. Hopper was obsessed by cinema - he was from an era where you could see three films a day and he often did so. He learnt a lot from watching movies especially film noir. He saw how the frame could create an impression of lonliness the emotion which he and films are great at expressing. His best compositions are all about how figures are isolated from their environment and show how this deeply introverted man felt about the world. You can see a progression in his work from aliention to outright disconnect from his surroundings as people gradually disappeared from his work leaving in the end only empty rooms. Many film makers have stolen directly from his work but I prefer the subtler approach where people have taken his ideas on composition and lighting incorporating them into the photography and design.
Some of these links are a bit tenous but I enjoyed making them as I hope you do too.
